Anger & Addictions

Would you like to know what Don Serratt, founder of LifeWorks thinks of us click here

"The root causes of addictions and anger are so often interwoven. An individual may be expressing pain through addiction which masks issues with anger that they also have. Mike Fisher’s team at British Association of Anger Management (BAAM) have an immense amount to offer those of us dealing with the addicted. Learning to deal with the issues that can cause anger effectively peels another layer of the individual away to help them heal. This material is vital to any individual’s development but all the more poignant for our clients. It fits exactly in line with our philosophy of recovery not just abstinence."

It has long been known that alcohol and drugs can be used to self anaesthetise. Equally they are used as ways of bypassing angry feelings. They can also be used to numb the emotions and traumas that may cause anger and, as such, become anger replacements.

Beating Anger – Beating Addictions

We would not pretend that our work is going to turn a user in to a clean person. We simply offer our knowledge, expertise and skills as another tool in the box for your volunteers and staff.

During our work we had two seminal moments. The first was a young lady with very low self esteem who used poetry as a way of dealing with the feelings she could not manage. She had written a poem about anger and agreed to share it.

The other seminal moment was during our work with the staff and volunteers.

On the staff training day one volunteer, an ex-teacher, declared “I don’t really want to be here. I have had enough of wasted training in my life, this will just be another waste of time.” She had arranged to leave early to collect a client. As she left, half way through the day she said “I wish I hadn’t arranged to do this now. This is the best training I have ever had and now I am missing it.”
